Using Apple HomeKit with your ecobee4

Your ecobee4 is ready to work with Apple HomeKit out of the box, making it easy for you to control  your thermostat from your iPhone or iPad. With HomeKit you can use Siri voice commands to control your thermostat, set configurable ‘scenes’ to control multiple HomeKit accessories with a single Siri command, and set location-based scene triggers to activate scenes when arriving or leaving home (known as geofencing).

How to set up HomeKit

Setting up and pairing your ecobee4 with HomeKit is easy. Just open your ecobee mobile app and follow these steps:

  1. Tap MENU icon in the upper left corner.
  2. Tap MANAGE HOMEKIT.
  3. Tap the PLUS in the upper right corner.
  4. Select ADD THERMOSTAT.
  5. Select a "Home" for that thermostat.
  6. Make sure both your thermostat and the iOS device are on the same 2.4Ghz network broadcast from your Wi-Fi router. (Check your iOS Wi-Fi settings to confirm this)
  7. Select the thermostat when it appears (if you have multiple, select "Say Hi" to confirm it's the correct thermostat)
  8. Go ahead and select "Add" once you've confirmed that it's the proper thermostat.
  9. Use the camera that appears to scan the HomeKit code that will appear on the ecobee thermostat screen (If it does not appear on the ecobee, select "Don't Have a Code or Can't Scan?")
  10. Pair the thermostat successfully - and it will be connected and ready to go on Homekit.

(If you have more than one ecobee, tap SAY HI to make sure you’re connecting to the right one.)

  1. Point your iPhone camera at the thermostat. You will see Paired with HomeKit on your thermostat.
  2. A default room will be created (you can change this later). Click NEXT.
  3. Success! You’ll see the 5 default commands you can start using! Click DONE.

What are HomeKit ‘Scenes’?

HomeKit ‘scenes’ allow you to adjust your thermostat and other HomeKit accessories with one command. For example, tell Siri “I’m leaving” and your thermostat will switch to your Away Comfort setting. Here are the 5 default ‘scenes’:

  1. Good morning: sets thermostat to Home comfort settings.
  2. Good night: sets thermostat to Sleep comfort settings
  3. I’m home: sets thermostat to Home comfort settings
  4. I’m leaving: sets thermostat to Away comfort settings
  5. Resume schedule: resumes the programmed schedule if the thermostat was placed on hold or was in vacation mode
