This article is for customers upgrading from ecobee4 or ecobee3 lite to ecobee SmartThermostat with voice control.
Whether installing your ecobee4 or ecobee3 lite was a simple process of swapping out your old thermostat or you had to install our Power Extender Kit (PEK) at your equipment, we have great news: If you are upgrading from ecobee4 or ecobee3 lite to ecobee SmartThermostat with voice control, you will find it to be a fairly easy transition with minimal re-wiring.
Upgrading to SmartThermostat with voice control from ecobee4 or ecobee3 lite
- Once you're ready to install SmartThermostat with voice control, ensure your furnace breaker is off and remove your current ecobee thermostat from the backplate by getting a firm grip on the front faceplate and pulling straight out.
If you had previously labelled your thermostat wires, you can continue to the next step. If you have not labelled your wires, use the wire labels provided or snap a quick picture of the wiring.
- Depending on your current ecobee's wiring, you may or may not have the PEK installed. If your wiring looks like the image below, you have the PEK module installed at your HVAC equipment side. If you don't have the PEK installed, please skip to step 3.
SmartThermostat with voice control uses the same PEK module as ecobee3 lite and ecobee4, so swapping out your PEK won't be necessary if you're upgrading.
If you do choose to swap out your PEK, simply remove your old PEK and do a wire-for-wire transfer with the new PEK.
Important: If you need to remove the panel at your furnace/air handler to access the PEK, you will need to ensure the panel is firmly back in place when you're done before turning on the breaker or the ecobee will not power on.
- At the thermostat, remove the wires from their terminals (press down on the square lever on the side of the terminal and remove the wire at the same time) and remove the backplate as well.
- Mount the backplate of the SmartThermostat with voice control and wire up the ecobee following your wire labels. Check that all wires are properly inserted into the terminal blocks on the ecobee by giving the wires a gentle tug to ensure they’re securely connected. With the wires in, place the SmartThermostat with voice control on the wall—it should click into place—and turn your breaker back on.
If successful, your SmartThermostat with voice control will power on and greet you.
What if my SmartThermostat with voice control doesn't power on?
Remove the ecobee from the wall and then pop it back in place. If there is power present at the ecobee, a green LED light will briefly flash.
If there is no green light and the screen remains blank, this means there is no power present at the ecobee.

Once you have successfully powered on your device, follow the onscreen instructions to set up your custom settings, schedule and repair any sensors. Please refer to this article if you are unsure how to do that: SmartSensors: FAQ and Setup.
Once it's configured, register your SmartThermostat with voice control and add it to your Home.
