ecobee Family Accounts: Frequently Asked Questions

What roles does ecobee support?

ecobee currently supports two roles for Family Accounts: Owner and Member. The breakdown of permissions per role can be found below:

Can one account be a member in multiple Homes?

Yes.

Can one account be the owner of multiple Homes?

Yes.

Can a Home have no members?

A home must have at least one user with the “Owner” role, but does not need to have users with the “Member” role.

Can a Home have no owner?

No, a Home will always have one owner, the user who created it.

As an owner/member, will I get notifications from members in my home when they interact with the devices in the home?

No.

As an owner/member, will I get a notification when another member is added to my home that I did not invite?

Yes. You will receive a notification confirming a new member when any new member is added to your home - whether you invited them, or someone else did.

As an Owner, can I configure the permissions that members will have in my home?

No. All members have the same permissions.

 

 

 

Member Invitation

 

How do you add new members?

You can invite new members in the mobile app following the steps below:

  • Open mobile app and select Account
  • Select Manage Homes
  • Select the home you want to invite someone to
  • Select Home Members
  • Select Add new member

Can members invite other members?

Yes.

Is there a max number of members per home?

The maximum members in a home, including the Owner, is 15.

What if I’m already sharing my account credentials with other family members?

When you are logged in as an Owner, follow the invite link to confirm whether you are the real Owner, or someone sharing the Owner’s account. Simply follow the instructions on the screen to create a new account and join the same home with your own email and password.

Member Management

Can you transfer ownership to another member?

No, ownership cannot be transferred.

Alternatively, you can unregister each device from one account, and register it to the other.

How do I view the list of members in my Home?

You can view the list of Members and their permissions in the mobile app following the steps below:

  • Open mobile app and select Account.

  • Select Manage Homes.

  • Select the home you want to see the members of.

  • Select Home Members.

On this screen you should be able to see a list of members in the home. Selecting any Member shows their permissions.

Member Removal

 

How do I remove a member from my home?

You can remove a Member from your home in the mobile app following the steps below:

  • Open mobile app and select Account.

  • Select Manage Homes.

  • Select the home you want to remove a member from.

  • Select Home Members.

  • Select the member you want to remove from your home.

  • Select Remove Member on the bottom of the member detail drill down page.

How do I leave a home I'm a member of?

You can leave a home you’re a Member of in the mobile app following the steps below:

  • Open mobile app and select Account.

  • Select Manage Homes.

  • Select the home you want to leave.

  • Select Leave Home.

Note: If a Member leaves the only home they’re in, they will be shown the home introduction wizard.

Can members remove other members?

No, only Owners can remove Members.

 

Home Management

 

Can members delete a Home?

No, only Owners can make changes to a Home.

Can members change a home address?

No, only Owners can make changes to a Home.

 

Adding/Removing Devices and eco+

 

Can members add devices to a home?

No.

Members can access the installation guides for Switch+ and thermostats, but cannot register new devices to a home, only the Owner can do that.

Can members remove devices from a home?

No, only Owners can remove devices from a home.

Can members view and control the home’s thermostat(s)?

Yes.

Can members view and control the home’s light switch(es)?

No. Only Owners can view and control the home’s light switch(es) for launch. We will be adding in lighting support in the near future.

Can members enroll in eco+?

No, only Owners can accept the Terms and Conditions and enrol in eco+.

Once enrolled, Members can see and adjust the settings, except for Time of Use or DR settings.

Can members turn on/off Autopilot?

Yes.

Can members sign up for subscriptions?

No, only Owners can sign up for subscriptions.

 

Troubleshooting

 

 

I'm a member and I can't see any thermostats in my Home!

First of all, ensure your ecobee is on the newest firmware. You can find a list of the latest firmware versions here. If you require a firmware update, please reach out to ecobee support.

Once the firmware is up to date, please have the Home's Owner do the following:

  • Open the ecobee app and tap Account in the bottom right
  • Tap Manage Homes
  • Tap the name of the Home the Member has been invited to
  • Tap EDIT under the Home name
  • Tap the green SAVE button to re-save the Home (once this is done, the Member may have to sign out of the app and sign back in before the changes take effect)

 

My Invite Link does not work

If the user is running an aggressive tracking/ad blocker (e.g. pihole), you won't be able to accept an invitation until you turn off that blocker
